#4636 German or Austrian Jaeger rifle by Lorenz Bossel of Suhl, circa 1860, full octagon 27” barrel,

Description

#4636 German or Austrian Jaeger rifle by Lorenz Bossel of Suhl, circa 1860, full octagon 27” barrel, about 58-caliber percussion w/fine bore. As with many of these jaeger rifles, this one has some elaborate wood scrolling in high relief and nice metal engraving. The wood is basically in VG+/Fine condition if not for a sizable sliver on the left side forestock and the wooden trigger guard (which was the usual ones seen on jaegers) has been replaced with what appears to be an old shotgun trigger guard. The metal is about Fine, and has a thin brown patina over most of the surface. Mechanically, the lock will not hold when cocked, but works fine outside the gun …and I suspect this has something to do with the set trigger mechanism. I may tinker with it a bit myself if time permits, but otherwise consider that the lock needs adjusting, as I see nothing missing or broken inside. The patch box latch is apparently missing and I have not been able to open it to see what is inside, but doubt it is anything valuable. Overall, this is a good quality Jaeger; I’ve had better ones, but at a MUCH higher price. It should also be noted that these earlier Germanic hunting rifles in flintlock configuration were the true grandfathers of our so-called “Kentucky Long Rifles”. There are a LOT of pictures of this neat old Jaeger, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. About VG+/Fine, as described. $1495
