Colt 1860 Army, 1861, 4-Screw
Description
Item Number C11281. Serial number 5451, this is a really decent 4-screw 1860 Army that shows moderate use with no US Military inspector marks. No original finish left, but a pleasing brownish gray patina on smooth metal with no pitting. The left recoil shield has a small hairline crack, hard to see, about three quarters of an inch long, running vertically. The crack can be seen in photos 2 and 8, and appears as a scratch. I feel that this crack has always been in the gun since manufacture, but was pretty much invisible until the gun lost its original finish and developed some patina, allowing the crack to become noticeably dark. With the rushed inspection process of that period, it would have been easy to miss. All numbers match, but wedge is un-numbered and I can find no number on the arbor. Cylinder scene is at about 30% and barrel address is half gone. No cartouches on grips, though they appear to be original to the gun. Strap channel is dark with oil, so no number is visible. Nice, tight barrel to frame fit. Action is okay, but could use a little fine tuning. Overall, this is a good, early Colt, no doubt having seen significant service in the Civil War.
